Depression: You Are Only Ever One Thought Away From Happiness

And 5 ways to help snap yourself out of a funk.

Depression is a severe condition that affects millions of people around the world. It can come on suddenly or build up slowly over time. In fact, depression is the leading cause of disability in older people.

Either way, depression affects people in different ways. Some may feel hopeless and unmotivated, while others may feel anger and resentment. And still, others may feel empty and worthless.

First, a little disclaimer that I am not a medical doctor. Therefore if you are depressed, you should seek help from a professional, as depression can be a symptom of an underlying physical health problem.

From a psychological point of view, it might come as a surprise to learn what depression actually is. You become depressed when you’re having depressing thoughts. It’s that simple! If you could change your thinking to happy thoughts, you would no longer be depressed.

I once heard a story about an 80-year-old woman who sought help for depression because she wanted to live out the rest of her days in a happier state of mind. The psychologist asked her if there was ever a time when she didn’t feel depressed. She replied, “I feel okay when I first wake up in the morning.”…
