Have you ever tried to change your behavior or give up something with sheer willpower? How did that work for you? If you’re like me, you probably weren’t successful.

Why willpower doesn’t work

Willpower doesn’t usually work because you’re using your conscious mind to stop a bad habit. As much as the conscious mind wants to lose weight, stop smoking, quit drinking, or whatever behavior you’re trying to change, it is not in control of things.

The conscious mind is only about 10% of your mind, while the unconscious comprises 90%. The unconscious mind is all of your thinking that is below the radar. So you think you’ve made up your mind to change a behavior, but the unconscious mind has other ideas.

Why would your unconscious mind sabotage your best efforts?

It doesn’t intend to derail you with some devious plan. The truth is that your unconscious mind is very straightforward and simple-minded. Your unconscious mind knows that “x” (insert smoking, drinking, unhealthy eating, or whatever your bad habit is) makes you happy, so it wants you to do more of it.
